[edit] Animation

Comic artists can work as freelance animators if they have the relevant training and experience. Currently this is done in a mostly digital environment using animation programs such as Adobe Flash.

[edit] Illustration

Comic artists that have the flexibility to work in different styles and under tight deadlines may be able to gain work as illustrators. Work can be done either by hand or digitally. If the work is done by hand it will still need to be scanned and made print ready. Artists are expected to know how to work in this manner and it is unlikely and unprofessional to expect a designer or editor to scan and edit your original artwork for you. To get into this filed it is important to construct a portfolio of your best work (both in hard copy and online) and approach consulting agencies that hire illustrators.

[edit] Teaching

Universities and TAFE's are often looking for sessional employees to teach into course such as animation, drawing, street art, comic art. A combination of industry experience and the right qualification are needed.

[edit] Workshops

Workshops are a good way to get teaching experience, earn money and also solidify your own practice. Often schools, Art galleries, councils and other such institutions are eager to employ comic artists to undertake comic making or zine making workshops. These are often aimed at getting the 'Youth' involved in productive activities, and it is important to understand these objectives to both secure the work and effectively deliver the workshop itself. Often the organisations ask for a 'Graphic Novel' workshop as this is what they think comics are called. This work is mostly gained by being involved in other comic events or through word of mouth. Work may also be gained by approaching organisations and submitting workshop ideas and plans.
