[edit] Comic Art in Academia
Often comic artists studying Fine Arts can run into misunderstandings with staff members about what it is they are trying to achieve and how comic art fits into the grand scheme of Art history. Whilst in recent times this has become less of an issue you still may need to defend your artistic choices.
Here are some helpful suggestions
Find artists that have used a comic art style in their work.
Not so much commercial artists working in comics but more so called 'Fine Artists' who have shown their work in galleries. For example,
- Jean Michelle Basquiat
- Phillip Guston
- Ray Johnson
- Roy Lichtenstein
- Andy Warhol
Look at Artists with similar concepts that are not necessarily comic artists
For example study Artists that,
- Make black and white drawings
- Use narratives
- Use text and image combination
- Divide up their compositions into sections
- Use other art reproductions techniques like printmaking
Understand the difference between what is Art and what is Craft
- What ideas are you trying to express though your art?
- Is your art only concerned with technical skill?
- Could your work focus more on themes than on style?
- Does your art have to take a traditional physical form? Could it be a installation, found objects, projections, web art, etc?
Understand your art
- Be ready to explain/justify your art
- Find ways to explain your art using art terms and ideas
- Avoid explaining your art by using words like 'cool' or 'Funky' words like these are not descriptive enough
Have fun
- Remember to have fun, do work that stimulates you
- Create work that you want to see, not what your think others would like to see
- Try to create series of works to prove your concepts, rather than just single 'masterpieces'
